Summary/Abstract: The article describes how the views concerning the essence and mission of university evolved – starting with its reform conducted by Humboldt and continuing until the present day. The author focuses on presenting the fundamental values shared by academics. These essential values, making up the academic ethos, and determining the uniqueness of the university, are: truth, autonomy, freedom, democracy, tolerance, pluralism. The exceptionality of the institution is further supported by the fact that it creatively combines two processes – the process of scientific research and the process of education. The model relationship maintained between the professor and the student is that of a master and an apprentice. The article becomes part of an ongoing debate on the role of university in the modern world.
