Social determinants of the phenomenon of dentophobia – the problem of children and adults

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the study was to analyze the problem of anxiety experienced by patients in the situation of a visit to a dentist, i.e. dentophobia, of which the potential cause may be a certain type ofpersonality shaped by, among others, based on childhood experience. For this purpose, there wereused two questionnaires : one for analyse personality and one for analyse anxiety. The results ofthe analysis showed that there are some connections between a particular type of personality andanxiety. It seems therefore important that the problem of possible dentophobia should be eliminated during childhood, when the child shapes various cognitive categories and develops patternsof coping in various situations. For this purpose, educational and preventive programs, involvingboth representatives of education and the health care system should be addressed specially tochildren and youth.
