Summary/Abstract: Introduction. The process of demographic aging of many societies causes the need to be interested in the quality of aging and its determinants. One of the threats are psychological problems occurring in the elderly, including affective disorders - anxiety and depression. The aim of the study was to examine the prevalence of anxiety and depression in the elderly and their relations to selected sociodemographic variables. It was also decided to examine the impact of anxiety and depression on the quality of aging and its aspects. Material and methods. There were 362 people examined: 284 women (78.45%) and 78 men (21.55%) aged 60-95. The questionnaire concerned gender, age, education, size of place of residence, housing, occurrence of chronic diseases and civil status. Anxiety and depression were examined using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the quality of aging - using the Successful Aging Index. Results. Disturbances and critical states of anxiety and depression were reported in about 25% of respondents. Gender did not differentiate the incidence of affective disorders. All adopted sociodemographic variables showed connections with the frequency of anxiety and depression - the adopted qualitative variables significantly differentiated statistically (p <.05).
