BATTLE OF DARA, JUN 530 AD

Summary/Abstract: The comprehensive reconstruction of the battle which took place in June 530 AD at the Roman border fortification Dara is presented in this paper. The first part of the paper is a brief description of the complex political and military relationships between the Eastern Roman and the Sasanian Empire at the end of the 5th and the beginning of the 6th century AD. A list of reasons for the need to build a new fortification Dara follows together with a brief description of its construction. The central part of the paper is dedicated to the battle of Dara and the preparations that both armies have made, and the tactics they have been applying during the battle itself. At the end of the paper a summary of the Dara fortress’ final construction works has been provided.
