Summary/Abstract: Since American military assistance program was aborted in 1959, Yugoslavia had been forced to increase its military cooperation with USSR. However, Soviet military intervention in Czechoslovakia in 1968 enforced that military relation between two states weakened. Faced with the possibility of the attack from the East in early 70s, Yugoslavia had insisted an revitalization of the military cooperation with USA. Americans had the same interest, fearing of possible Soviet penetration in the Mediterranean which could jeopardize American allies Italy, Turkey and Greece. These initiatives were considered as important step to the constant improvement of relations between two states and their armies. Yugoslav army was modernized due to the fact that modern American armament was purchased. At the same time American administration had positive attitude towards Yugoslavia’s internal and foreign policy and was the guarantee of its security and survival.
