Summary/Abstract: Display of the identity crisis that occurs as a result of changes and progress to which Pirandello and his contemporaries testify, is conjured through the fictional characters who in turn possess numerous traits and emotions known to the author himself. The hero of the novel becomes incompetent, unable to fit into society and the role that social conventions impose on him. The whole philosophy hidden behind the role of "incompetent" is particularly associated with the term of absurdity and respectively the meaninglessness of living. Consolation is impossible to find, even in death, since the religion cult has lost its credibility. The heroes of Pirandello's novels One, No-one and One Hundred Thousand and The Late 66 Mathias Pascal carry within a deeply imprinted sense of maladjustment and desire to find happiness by living on the margins of society, which finally turns out to be futile, and this for one of them symbolizes the road to madness, while the other one is thrown into a deep despair and desire to return to his mother’s womb.
