Summary/Abstract: Tracing its origins almost 30 years back in a politically assumed agenda, gender archaeology continue to offer a fruitful analysis context for archaeological data, constantly exploring new inquiry directions which complement its initial feminist critical approach to archaeology. International working parties and conferences organized by the most influential professional groups in archaeology as well as collective volumes, already edited as tribute to formative papers, clearly evidence the longstanding captivation wielded by the topic, in part for its combatant, engaged spirit and results which break traditional interpretations, but as well, for its potential of revealing aspects of past societies and identities as diverse as lineage, connections between age, sex, status, inheritance and authority, social dynamics, definition of individual identity in relation to age, meaning of gender categories for economy, labour division and spatial organisation, social hierarchies and level of social organisation. The variety of research directions in which the analysis focussed on some level or another on gender issues, outline the fact that gender is not a category to be considered by itself, but only an element in a complex mix which is identity and social dynamics.
