Summary/Abstract: It is well known that the European Union is founded on the principles of liberty, democracy, respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law, a phrase mentioned in the Treaty on European Union concluded at Maastricht in 1992 and entered into force in 1993. These principles are common to all Member States, but ensuring compliance with them requires a comprehensive approach to all threats to the area of freedom, security and justice referred to for the first time in the EU’s institutional context in the Treaty of Nice of 2001.As regards ensuring freedom, security and justice in the EU’s administrative space, we believe that the Treaty on European Union in Lisbon entered into force on 1 January 2009, in its 2016 consolidated version, contains the most important regulations in this matter. Therefore, our material presents the most important changes brought by the Treaty to this field.
