ARE ICONS IDOLS?

Summary/Abstract: This paper will investigate the differences and similarities of icons and idols in light of the insights from Russian theology and contemporary phenomenology. Starting from some examples from the Bible, which explicitly bans all idolatrous representation of God or other gods, this paper will discuss the ways in which the arguments of twentieth century critics are constructed so as to save the icon from the sin of idolatry. This paper does not attempt to give a definitive final answer to this question but to review and interrogate the validity of the above-mentioned arguments
