Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes utopia as an inter/trans/national and inter/trans/disciplinary phenomenon, i.e. its manifestations in architecture, philosophy, literature, painting, popular music, film and social movements of different nations and cultures. In the first part of the paper the focus is placed upon the various mythical and religious concepts predating the formal appearance of the litarary genre proper in 1516, with the publication of Thomas More’s Utopia. Interestingly, over centuries utopian thinkers and writers have embarked upon the so-called interutopian dialogue freely borrowing from and commenting their predecessors’ works, thus promoting the establishment of the universal utopian tradition as such. Although seemingly knocked down by dystopia, in 20th and 21st century literature at least, the utopian impulse is still very much alive in various segments of popular culture (film industry, popular music, graphic novels) and among social movements, such as the Occupy movement or Anonymous, which gives us hope that utopia will survive.
