THE HADITH NARRATOR SHIP OF IBN SA‘D

Summary/Abstract: Because the first one and half of hijri century was the period of birth and development for hadith and hadith science, during this period, the information about hadith and hadith science were transferring mostly verbally through memorization. From the half of the second hijri year when written tradition began to take place of the verbal tradition, approximately during the middle of the third hijri century almost all of the hadiths were written and classified according to their subjects and narrators. So the hadith classification lived its golden age during this period. In parallel, information about hadith science and hadith narrators began to be written and thus the first examples of the Tabaqat books started to appear. Here in this research, the hadith narratorship of Muhammed b. Sa’d, who inscribed his name among compilers of the first tabaqat by compiling two valuable works named as the Big Tabaqat and the Small Tabaqat will be examined. Ibn-i Sa’d who especially gave information in his “The Big Tabaqat” about the hadith narrators lived up to the century he lived in, pioneered many critics and historians for creating their works along with transferring the information that was transfered before him by writing or verbally.
