Summary/Abstract: When sustainable design criteria are taken into consideration, it is known that in works designed in historical environment, solutions convenient to the conditions of the climate and nature of the environment which they have been in, have been implemented. On the other hand, it is widely acknowledged that these neatly detailed solutions are approaches that are the least harmful to the natural cycle. Another assent is that sustainable design criteria of the traditional buildings involve ecological approaches that should be copied by contemporary design and planning issues. In this study, traditional Niğde houses located in Cappadocia Region were investigated, aiming at uncovering energy-effective design solutions in traditional buildings in Anatolia and presenting them to the contemporary and future designers as examples to be followed. The scope of the study is to investigate energy-effective characteristics of traditional houses in Niğde, which have survived to the present and have not lost their distinctive features. Within the scope of the study, energy-effectiveness of traditional houses were analysed and evaluated with respect to layout and orientation, form configuration, appropriate space organization, building shell features and material characteristics.
