Summary/Abstract: I have chosen the special case of the 19th century art of painting in the RomanianDanubian Countries as this article’s research theme in order to show that it represents asuccessful example of cultural diffusion and, at the same time, a special case ofacculturation. I will demonstrate how much we owe to the occidentals, as well as howthe cultural values that the foreigners have brought about have become rooted, as theseforeigners remained here or as our young people who went to study in the greatEuropean cultural centers have returned home. By settling down here, all these artists, who at the beginning were just foreigners, prove at least two things: that there has beenan exchange of cultural values which can be compared with those from the rest ofEurope, as well as that our society was open to new things, and both parties knew andhad the ability to bring into full play this openness.
