“And [...] When the Harvest Came I Was the Master of the Situation”: Postwar Agriculture as Remembered by the Ihabitants of the Village of Stogi in Żuławy Wiślane

Summary/Abstract: Relacja Franciszka Komasary została nagrana w maju 2018 r. w ramach projektu „Krajobraz kulturowy Żuław a praca rolnika w narracjach powojennych osadników zamieszkałych na obszarach wiejskich” realizowanego podczas ósmej edycji grantu Oral History finansowanego przez Ośrodek „Pamięć i Przyszłość. W opracowaniu przedstawiono postać Franciszka Komasary jako członka Batalionów Chłopskich na Kielecczyźnie, aktywnego rolnika i działacza organizacji rolniczych w okresie tużpowojennym oraz PRL-u na Żuławach. Podstawą zaprezentowanej relacji jest swobodna narracja biograficzna świadka historii dotycząca życia we wsi Komorów na Kielecczyźnie, działań wojennych oraz przesiedlenia się w 1947 r. na Żuławy i założenia własnego gospodarstwa rolnego specjalizującego się w uprawie zbóż i buraka cukrowego oraz hodowli bydła mlecznego. Część biograficzną uzupełniono w przypisach i części końcowej o odpowiedzi świadka na pytania z drugiej i trzeciej – kwestionariuszowej części relacji, w których F. Komasara omawia sytuację w okresie międzywojennym na wsi kieleckiej, powojenne rolnictwo i spółdzielczość na Żuławach, a także powstanie i działalność Kółka Rolniczego oraz organizację życia mieszkańców wsi Stogi. Franciszek Komasara’s account was recorded in May 2018 as part of the project titled: “The Cultural Landcape of Żuławy Wiślane and the Work of the Farmer in the Postwar Narratives of Settlers in Rural Areas” realized as part of the eighth edition of the Oral History grant financed by the “Remembrance and Future” Centre. This text presents the figure of Franciszek Komasara as a member of the Peasant Battalions in the Kielce region, an active farmer, and an activist of farmers’ organizations in the period immediately following World War II as well as in the Polish People’s Republic in Żuławy Wiślane. The fundament of the presented account is a casual biographical narrative of a witness to history about life in the village of Komorów in the Kielce region, the war, and resettlement to Żuławy Wiślane in 1947 as well as Komasara’s establishment of his own farm specializing in the production of grains and sugar beets as well as dairy cattle breeding. In footnotes and in the final section, the biographical part is supplemented by the witness's responses to questions from the second and third parts of the section of the account that is a questionnaire. In them, Franciszek Komasara discusses the situation of rural Kielce in the interwar period, postwar agriculture, and cooperatives in Żuławy Wiślane as well as the foundation and activity of the Agricultural Circle and the organization of the life of the inhabitants of the village of Stogi.
