Summary/Abstract: The question of marginality of early modern Balkan visual culture is not a question of objectivity of the science of art history as it is often thought, but much more a question of historical conditions – attitudes, methods, canons in art history, and complex scientific, educational and cultural engineering. The marginalisation of Balkan visual culture was done in accordance with multiple parameters – the stylistic history of art, national narratives, and the demands of the society and state, as well as on the basis of the so-called categorization of artwork and monuments.
