Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the tympanum icons of the Hospitality of Abraham and the reasons for their inclusion in iconostases from the late-14th to the 17th century, usually above the entrance to the prothesis, and more rarely above the Diakonicon doors or the Royal doors. An old hypothesis featuring a direct link between these icons and the relic of the table of Abraham kept in Constantinople is examined critically. The evolution of medieval altar screens and the elaboration of the decoration of their entrances in a later period is surveyed briefly and the apparition of the Abraham’s hospitality icons and their specific placement is viewed as part of this process.
