Summary/Abstract: The article presents data on the first painter in Banja Luka known by his name, Pavao Cvjetković. His icons from Liplje Monastery, created between 1879 and 1892, were in 1892 rated as insultingly ugly by priest Jovan Novaković. Chairmen of the Banja Luka and Rebrovac parishes, merchants, opposed this judgement next year, praising Cvjetković painting. Preserved parts of the Liplje iconostasis belong to the so-called “zograph” painting, based on Byzantine painting’ formulas with some hints of the baroque models. Contradictory judgements of Cvjetković’s work can be explained with different esthetics – one of an educated cleric and another of local merchants.
