The Role of Memory in Dubravka Ugreshich’s Ministry of Pain

Summary/Abstract: This article examines memory and its role in the life of emigrants living in Amsterdam who arrived there after the beginning of the Yugoslav War. The characters’ personal trauma as a result of the loss of collective and, to some extent, of individual memory is foregrounded together with the characters’ attempt to build coping mechanisms to deal with their current situation.
