Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the role of ports of the Adriatic Sea in the history of the Central European area. It singles out the importance of Trieste in various periods of time and the strategic geo-political and economic forces that changed significantly the role and character of the port of Trieste after the end of the first world war. The flows of goods were reoriented away from the Adriatic Sea, as the ports at the Atlantic coast in Germany and the Netherlands gained importance.
