Summary/Abstract: At the end of World War Two, on the political stage of France new parties emerged based on their newly found legitimacy of participating in the Resistance movement. Among the new political forces, a Christian Democratic party called Mouvement Républicain Populaire gained much popular support. In the years that followed it became a constant governing party in the short-lived Fourth French Republic. Unlike other Christian Democratic parties in Germany or Italy, the French one never outlived the life of the Republic it helped found, vanishing from the political landscape after 1968. Suffering from the inner contradictions of its doctrine, threatened by an overwhelming popular Gaullist party, compromised by the colonial wars it ignited, and ongoing internal instability, the MRP became a synonym of French Christian Democracy`s identity dilemmas.
