Summary/Abstract: The fascination of classical civilization and the desire to restore the ancient splendor of Rome was the leitmotif of the life and political mission of Cola di Rienzo. From the analysis of some chapters of the Cronica di Anonimo Romano, as from the letters and the writings of Francesco Petrarca and Cola di Rienzo, a dramatic and at the same time controversial portrait is outlined. On the one side faithful to the ideals of humanitas on the other strongly contradictory and immensely ambitious, Cola di Rienzo appears as a perfect rhetor who often resorts to the rhetoric of images, but not always as a vir bonus, to reach after all his tragic ending.
