Summary/Abstract: After a short review of the beginning of Bulgarian folklore, the author briefly considers the extensive scientific and popular science activity of Hristo Vakarelski, the outstanding Bulgarian ethnographer, on the occasion of his half century of scientific work and his 80th birthday. Brief biographical notes are given, the tremendous popular science activity (including the museum work) of Hristo Vakarelski being cursorily considered, activities which are an inseparable part of his scientific work. Vakarelski's scientific work, expressed in the numerous books, studies, reviews, reports and lectures he has written and read both at home and abroad, and the dozens of talks he has given is also cursorily considered. The total number of published contributions, small and large, in newspapers, periodicals, miscellanies and bulletins, reaches the figure of 960. Of these 203 deal with research, there are 20 individual books (some in joint authorship), and about 180 studies, articles in Bulgarian, Polish, Czech, German, English, French and other periodicals. His book Ethnography of Bulgaria, which appeared in Bulgarian in 1974, and before that in Polish (1965) and German (1969) is a summarizing work. Of the 960 contributions published, about 650 are popular-science. Hristo Vakarelski has worked in all spheres of Bulgarian ethnography. In 1965, for his multilateral activity he was honoured with the award of the title Honoured Worker in Science. In the same year he was awarded the international Herder Prize.
