Summary/Abstract: The place and importance of target culture have become an important issue in foreign language teaching. In this study, specific characteristics of culture that coursebooks are expected to include and the methods to transfer cultural knowledge throghout the learning process were singled out and a control list has been prepared within the scope of insight gained through literature review,. This control list comprises 2 steps and 31 sub-groups. The three fundamental cases sought within the scope of the present study are: what the viability of using a control list in investigating cultural elements in coursebook is, how the target culture is defined in primarly school coursebooks, and how powerful these books are in terms of presentation of the target culture elements. The primary data of study were collected through a constructed control list to analyze two English language teaching coursebooks used in elementary schools under the auspices of Ministry of National Education. The results indicate that the checklist, designed in the light of notions and suggestions gathered from literature review, can be used effectively in analyzing how cultural elements are handled in coursebooks.
