Summary/Abstract: Hand knitted socks, which are one of the most beautiful samples of our material culture, play a role in handing life style down from generation to generation as well as being a part of traditional clothing. Hand knitted socks and bootees which has different technique features from region to region, also bear meaning with their material, color, knitting technique and traditional motifs. Sock and bootee hand knitting, has an important role in girls’ dowry as a gift besides its daily usage depending upon the customs and traditions. In the field study that was conducted in May 30, 2013 in Gerede district of Bolu Province, sock and bootee samples belonging to region were determined. It was determined that as a result of change in clothing habit hand knitted socks left their place to bootees. For this reason, very few sock samples and numerous and varied bootees were encountered in the region. In this study, sock and bootee samples determined in the region were examined in terms of their material, color, technique, motif and design characteristics.
