Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to interpret the three poems by Ivan Bunin, containing the theme of angel which so far has not been the subject of detailed studies of experets in his work. The first of the poems — Михаил (1919) — refers to the Christian tradition. Archangel Michael is shown as the Archistrateg of the heavenly hosts and God’s warrior, by his appearance resembling a cherub from Genesis, guarding the access to the Garden of Eden after the fall of the first people. The other two works — Сатана Богу (1903–1906) and Бессмертный (1903–1906) — refer to the tradition of Islam. In both cases, the Koran serves only as a creative impulse for Bunin. The first poem is a poetic vision of the fall of angels and man. The second work presents the vision of the end of the world. The poet departs from the traditional — the merciful and just image of Muslims’ God and presents him as a fearful, threatening judge, before which no sinner escapes.
