Summary/Abstract: The article concentrates on the existence and function of the Italian motive in the whole (both pre- and post-war) poetry by Czesław Miłosz. Different origins of this motive are indicated, including actual travels to Italy, adequate reading-pieces and personal patronage of Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz. Italian experience in Czesław Miłosz’s poetry is treated as a creative stimulus to consider vital historiosophical, aesthetic and existentional issues, but also as an inspiration for contemplation and cogitation of intellectual character. Thus poems by Czesław Miłosz are not to be interpreted according to a chronological order in his biography. It is consequently demonstrated that Czesław Miłosz proposes his own poetic version of Italy and this version is autonomous from the convention preserved in the tradition of Polish literature of the 19th and the first half of 20th century.
