Summary/Abstract: In the establishment years of the Republic of Turkey, great importance was given to agriculture and animal husbandry, which were influenced by the negative conditions brought about by the wars in the last periods of the Ottoman Empire and which constituted an important part of economic life. In this regard, Turkish Republic capitalized on the knowledge and experiences of Hungarian experts and Hungary, which had made a great progress in the fields of agriculture and agriculture-based animal husbandry. In Ataturk era, many Hungarian experts, particularly in the fields of agriculture and animal husbandry, were invited to Turkey. One of these experts is the internationally and nationally renowned scholar Veterinarian Dr. Oszkár Wellmann (1876-1943). At the invitation of the Turkish Government, Wellmann made two expeditions to Turkey, suggested some animal breeding regions and set up some principles to develop agriculture-based animal husbandry by establishing a balance between the agricultural conditions of the country and its animal raising policy. The Ministry of Agriculture prepared their development plants on the basis of Wellmann’s reports. The purpose of the current study is to evaluate the possible findings that can be explained as his having brought new, realistic and applicable principles to agriculture-based animal husbandry in Turkey within the context of the Turkish-Hungarian relations of the period by using the reports submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture by Wellmann, documents from the Hungarian National Archive (Magyar Országos Levéltár: MOL) and Ministry Republic Archive. Moreover, samples of the photographs taken during his investigations are presented.
