Summary/Abstract: One of the aims of this paper will be to examine some of the contemporary theories of autonomy, and the role of reflection on autonomy in the development of the major trends in political theory. Reflection on autonomy comes either as the focus of important monographies and edited studies (G. Dworkin, Th. Hill, J. Christman, H. Frankfurt, J. Schneewind) or as an underlying idea in the premises of liberal, communitarian or republican and other justificatory accounts of political and social institutions. In some form of another, autonomy as value, ideal, principle, right or virtue is invoked or contested in the studies that will be analyzed below.
