Summary/Abstract: There is an increasing number of voices among political scientists arguing that trust is positively related to democracy and its seemingly decreasing trend should worry us. Dahl believes that owing to the scale of modem and post-modem societies, cognitive and affective obstacles hamper the achievement of predispositions toward civic virtues. Trust is considered by many as being part of these civic virtues and its dissolution should be deplored. But, is trust really important or not in a democratic regime where institutions were designed "to produce a decent political life in the absence of less than complete trust"?
