Summary/Abstract: Alfonso Vallejo is one of the most famous playwrights of modern Spain. He is also a poet, a painter and a doctor. He combines all of those disciplines and this has its consequences in the construction of the drama. Vallejo tries to reach the fundaments of human soul, which is possible only when one rejects realistic aesthetics. Critics describe his theatre as existential, but also detect some characteristics of surrealism and the theatre of the absurd. We consider Vallejo´s theatre as continuation of the theatre of the absurd, at least in some parts of his plays. The purpose of our work is to determine some elements of the theatre of the absurd in his play El escuchador de hielo. Moreover, we would like to focus on the vanguardist tradition seen as part of canonic theatre and its relationship with Vallejo´s plays.
