Summary/Abstract: On the basis of the results furnished by population censuses carried out in the Habsburg Empire in the 1869-1810 period, the author analyses the changes in the vocational population structure focusing exclusively on professions that could be found in the non-agrarian manufacturing sector. The available data indicate that the Slovene part of Istria was considerably lagging behind the process of industrialisation when compared to the entire Slovene ethnic territory. No major differences could however be established when the development of individual industrial and trade sectors were examined.
