Summary/Abstract: This essay is centered on the analysis of the Italian translations of Gaston Bachelard’s La Poétique de la rêverie (1960); in particular, it considers the modalities according to which target texts convey the various metaphorical occurrences disseminated in the original text. Leaving aside the specifically linguistic constraints – which concern the divergence between the two languages involved in the translation process – the analysis focuses on the changes that choices which are to be attributed to translators and their « horizon » produce. Furthermore, such an analysis becomes not only a tool that brings into light the set of problems underlying the theoretical practice of translation but also and above all a privileged way to examine in depth the knowledge of the source text and that of the complex meanings it conceals. The second translation of La Poétique de la rêverie, which dates back to 2008, comes up clearly as the result of a revision of the first translation published in 1972. Consequently, the comparative study of the source text and target texts ends up to reveal the specific traits characterizing the revised edition as well; thus it allows one to check if and to what extent it manages to fill the gap produced by those particular mechanisms coming into play at the moment of the re-enunciation of the text in an « other » language.
