The need of national English textbooks and specifics of creating of textbooks for needs of the Slovak pupil

Summary/Abstract: English language has a dominant place in the Slovak educational system and it is a compulsory foreign language from the third grade of primary schools. International and national research studies show that textbooks have a strong position in Slovak schools, and for this reason, it is very important to use good English language textbooks which would fulfil the needs of Slovak pupils. The market in Slovakia is full of English language textbooks from big international publishers, which are not always suitable for the needs of Slovak learners. This paper compares international textbooks and Slovak textbooks focusing on the specific needs of Slovak learners. There have been requirements to create national textbooks for many years, but such books are still missing, or the existing ones have great difficulties to get into Slovak schools.
