Using GR&R to Evaluate a Measuring System

Summary/Abstract: Organisations have to demonstrate that their products meet specified requirements. What is more, to be able to make decisions on improvement, changes in technology, or investing, they need to evaluate the quality of their processes. To do so, an organisation must have in place appropriate measurement techniques that enable assessment of the current state of their processes and prove that their product meets requirements. It is of crucial importance that the reliability of measurements be assessed, especially where decisions are to be made on the basis of the results. GR&R is one method for carrying out such assessments. It provides information about the repeatability and reproducibility of measurements taken in a production system. The article presents the GR&R method, the procedure for evaluating a measurement system and the results of a study that used this assessment method along with statistical software (Minitab).
