Summary/Abstract: The Hungarian economy and the development of cities are influenced by the support gained from EU funds. One of the main goals of such resources is to support innovation, however, only little research has been undertaken so far to examine their effect on innovation and their spatial distribution. In this study, the outcomes of EU co-financed grants that were awarded and paid in Hungary during the period 2004–2017 and provide financing for innovation development, are summarised both at national and local levels. Our main research question focuses on the existence of a spatial pattern of innovation resources and the effect of these resources at the local level. The authors examine the EU co-financed Hungarian innovation resources for the years 2004–2017 and – based on indicators of secondary data sources – the amounts drawn at local, city level as well as the effects induced by them. The results of the research show that although significant sources of funding for innovation have been available in Hungary since the country’s EU accession, the efficiency of the use of such sources is difficult to detect at the local level. For example, 56% of the awarded EU cofinanced grants for innovation were not drawn by the cities (Dunaújváros, Győr, Kecskemét, Pécs, and Tatabánya) examined in this research or the projects were not started or finished.
