Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the present study is to analyse the territorial differentiating role of the social and economic environment in employability by the use of a previously developed (Alpek–Tésits 2019) employability index (F-index), as well as to reveal the main types of settlement structure and identify its characteristic elements. The basis of the analysis is provided by the breakdown of the F-indexinto sub-indices and indicator groups, in which the social, economic aspects of employability and the dynamism of the relationship between the two were defined. The types of settlements were created with the help of hierarchical cluster analysis byusing the Ward method and squared Euclidean distance. The study points out that the role of social factors in the emergence of territorial differences is stronger in terms of the strength of effects, this is followed by the economic environment and then by the elements of matching supply and demand. The analysis examines the characteristics and spatial patterns of the social and economic aspects of employability in the dimension of settlements, as well as the role of individual factors in promoting it. Accordingly, it identifies four typical settlement types in the Hungarian spatial structure: strong centres, advanced peripheral regions, an older transition zone, and youthful but disadvantaged settlements. The study formulates proposals for increasing employability for all spatial types.
