Summary/Abstract: The security risks in the Balkans are analyzed as an integral part of the security of Europe. An important thing in this case is that all countries in the Western Balkans aspire for EU membership and that all countries, except Serbia, are looking towards NATO membership. Serbia is a specific case and it is reassuring that Serbia is developing a partnership with the NATO alliance. Another stabilizing factor in the general question of security in the Balkans is that the political elites that are a risk factor for peace in the region don’t have any means for violence that would lead to border changes. However, they are increasing the military spending in their countries and it is highly doubtful if these changes are for security and defensive reasons only, but unjust territorial ambitions towards their neighbors should not be ruled out. The international subjects have different opinions about the resolution of the crisis in Bosnia, but all of them have the same stance on the fundamental thing that Bosnia and Herzegovina should be an independent, stable and prosperous country, member of the European Union. NATO is treated as a specific value that is gathering the Western countries in the interest of a strengthened global and European security. The majority of countries also advocate that Bosnia and Herzegovina should be a NATO member.
