Summary/Abstract: In Slovakia, active ageing is a relatively unknown concept. This term, introduced in 1953 by R. J. Havighurst and R. Albrecht1, has been frequently used in English journals and monographs though currently it is often replaced by the term successful ageing. It refers to slowly proceeding process of ageing characterised by the absence of chronic diseases and the presence of persisting activities performed as a part of individual’s social and spiritual life. The aim of this paper is to highlight the topic of active ageing as a challenge facing the Church and society represented by the involvement of seniors it the social and spiritual life. In this way seniors can feel accepted, appreciated and useful, which enables them to cultivate authentic interpersonal relations, build proper self-esteem and look to the future - the autumn of life - with optimism.
