The Slovene Communists and the Issue of the Macedonian Nation in the Year 1923

Summary/Abstract: The author discusses the standpoints of the Slovene Communists (and also the communists from other parts of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia) towards the Macedonian nation in the discussion on the national issue initiated in the Communist Party of Yugoslavia in the second half of 1923. In this discussion the Slovene communists never doubted the national individuality of the Macedonians and were thus the first in the Communist Party of Yugoslavia to regard, already in 1923, the Macedonians as a separate and independent nation, pleading that they beconsidered as such in the entire Communist Party of Yugoslavia. The author also discusses the standpoints of the Slovene communists towards the national issue in general, emphasizing the fact that they were the first in the Communist Party of Yugoslavia to reject the idea of national unity and to accept federalism as the only possible solution of the national issue in Yugoslavia. He also explains the reasons that determined the standpoint of the Slovene communists that the Macedonians were a nation and draws attention to the influence which this standpoint had on the young Slovene left-wing intelectuals in the second half of the twenties.
