Summary/Abstract: It is commonly accepted to mark Calvin’s crucial debut in Christian theology with the issuing of the 1536 version of his Institutes. Although this is true as a matter concerning the date of publication, yet historically it is not at all insignificant, that the primary concern of the young Reformer was, perhaps curiously, the fate of the human soul after death. Modern scholarship is just beginning to give his pre-1536 theological thought a more detailed attention.1
