The teaching and political career of Sámuel Méhes in the spirit of the reform age (19th century)

Summary/Abstract: Kolozsvár (Cluj/Klausenburg) was the cultural capital of Transylvania even before the opening of the University (1872) due to its three famous colleges. Between the professors of the Calvinist College must be mentioned the two members of the Méhes family: György, the father, and Sámuel, the son. Both of them were teaching Mathematics and Natural Sciences. György Méhes (1746–1809) following studies in Göttingen, Tübingen and Utrecht started to teach in 1776, he wrote some school-books in Philosophy, Mathematics and had an important role in the construction of the school-building. Sámuel Méhes (1785–1852) just quitted his studies in Heidelberg when he was elected professor in 1809. He also wrote some school-books in Mathematics and supported the school- and church-constructions. He was the editor of the first Hungarian political newspaper (Erdélyi Hiradó) of Transylvania for 17 years. As a politician here presented his native town in the Parliament of Transylvania, and had an important role in the 1848 Revolution. He was a supporter of progressive ideas. Méhes was member of the Hungarian Academy of Science.
