Summary/Abstract: The years 1968–1971 were a tortuous time in the history of Czechoslovakia. On the one hand they brought the pro-reform process known as the Prague Spring, an attempt at a large-scale economic reform and the restoration of civil rights, which raised many people’s hopes for an overall improvement in the situation and that the dream of “socialism with a human face” would come true. On the other hand, however, they also brought the humiliating invasion of the Warsaw Pact armies, the Soviet occupation of the country, the gradual elimination of most of the achievements of the pro-reform process and, especially, a major political purge in society in the form of the so-called renewal of party membership cards, a step that affected hundreds of thousands of people. From the viewpoint of the party-and-state hierarchy, it can be said that the pro-reform process and its removal was obviously carried out at all levels, in which the lower-ranking spheres were always somewhat behind events in the top echelons and at headquarters. It is therefore important to devote attention both to the party-and-state leadership as well as its local and regional officials.
