Summary/Abstract: The article presents the background and course of turbulent religious and social events in the Moscow state in the mid-17th century on the example of the life of father Ivan Neronov. He was one of the forerunners of the moral-religious renewal of the Romanov dynasty. It was interrupted by patriarch Nikon, who introduced liturgical changes. They led to a conflict with father Ivan and his associates. This is the beginning of a split within the Russian Orthodox Church and the creation of the (existing to this day) Old-Believer movement.
