Summary/Abstract: One of the most controversial issues behind the “European idea” is the question of euroscepticism of the individuals living in Western European states as well as the newly accessed states of Central and Eastern Europe. Euroscepticism in West Europe is usually understood as scepticism regarding the current form of the EU, unwillingness to further integrate, keeping the national grandeur, etc. In order to examine the roots and further implications of ‘euroscepticism’, this article focuses on ideology and strategy as two elements of manipulation of euroscepticism in the respective countries. After examining two elements frequently connected to the notion of euroscepticism, one can argue that there are different levels or different layers of euroscepticism among the general public at the very local level of politics and also at elite-level politics.
