Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the issue of the role of the Police in a state governed by the rule of law. It focuses on one of the most controversial issues, namely, the use of measures of direct coercion by police officers. By analyzing legal regulations governing the use of coercive measures and comparing them with general moral norms based on the natural law, the author attempts to find ethical justification for the powers of constraint exercised by legal, state authorities. An attempt has also been made to investigate how this law influenced the professional ethics of the police, i.e. the rules that officers should follow in their service to the public.
