Rāvaṇārjunīya – Translation with an Introduction

Summary/Abstract: The Uttarakāṇḍa, the last book of the Rāmāyaṇa is often regarded as apocryphal, since its characteristics differ from other parts of the epic. Here, light is thrown on Rāma’s flaws, while the minor Rāvaṇa-epic included in the book shows the evil demon king to fairly good advantage. It reports that Rāvaṇa undertook many daring exploits in the past. Among others, he once encountered Kārtavīrya Arjuna, the arch enemy of Paraśurāma, another Viṣṇuavatāra. I chose to show Hungarian readers the story about this meeting. In my introduction I also discuss a plausible secondary reading of the myth, according to which it can be interpreted as an example of the Śaiva-Vaiṣṇava rivalry.
