Management in SMEs: Problems And Solution Suggestions

Summary/Abstract: Purpose – In this study, it is aimed to determine which functions SMEs have the most problems in and to develop solutions to these problems by detecting the management problems and the relationship between the management functions. Design/methodology/approach – In the study, a survey was conducted with the SME executives operating in Şırnak and the problems they encountered regarding the management functions were determined. Then the relations between the functions were examined by regression analysis. Findings – According to the results of the survey, SME managers have the most problems in control function; have less problems in coordination function. A positive correlation was found between the functions except the control function and a negative but not significant correlation was found between the control function and the coordination function only. It is identified that the planning function has a significant positive effect on other functions other than control, the organization function has a significant positive effect on the leading and coordination functions. It has also been determined that the leading function has a positive effect on coordination and control functions. Conclusion – According to these results, SME managers should pay attention not only to short term planning but also to long-term planning. It is recommended that determining a formal organizational structure in line with planning, adopting a policy on the authorities and responsibilities, coordinating with the employees and evaluating the results will affect the success of the firms.
