Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the study is to determine the level of conceptual understanding of 7th grade students about the particle structure of matter through formative assessment questions. The research was conducted with 95 students studying in a state secondary school located in Gebze during the Fall semester of 2017-2018 academic year. A case study method of descriptive model was used in the study. The research data were collected by open-ended formative assessment questions prepared by the researchers. Student responses evaluated according to the developed grade scoring key, which is coded as “correct justification”, “partial justification”, “false justification” and “empty”. The question related to the drawing was evaluated with a different grade scoring key. Qualitative and quantitative data obtained were analyzed descriptively. At the end of the study, it was found that more than half of the students answered the questions incorrectly and made false explanations. It was also determined that the students were insufficient to draw the particles. At the end of the study, it is suggested that include the formative assessment method which aims to determine the misunderstandings of the students before the teaching of a subject and evaluate the process instead of product-oriented evaluation.
