Summary/Abstract: A number of major corporate accounting scandals, as well as the financial crisis of 2008, have brought into question the legitimacy of the business elites. This article analyzes the evolution of the distinctive educational tracks and recruitment processes characterizing the managing directorates of the biggest German and French companies. First, it is shown that the German and French models of education for producing such business elites still remain basically different, particularly in terms of theirintellectual perspectives, even if their organization and treatment of social concerns remain rather similar. Second, it is argued that the evolution of these distinctive national models has been, nonetheless, constrained by the continuous internationalization of their firms, as well as the overall globalization of the world economy and the Americanization of the modes of corporate governance. Finally, an empirical analysis is proposed which examines the profiles of managers from certain of the largest German and French, while broadly confirming the foregoing conclusions. Furthermore, even though the economic elites of the two countries have become simultaneously more homogeneous and international, there remain distinctive national cultural characteristics.
