Summary/Abstract: The general state of society as a whole brought about the change in family structure, and one of the newer, more frequent modality of families are one parent families. Although the one parent families have always existed, their social treatment has varied throughout history, as well as the terminology itself, and causes of single parenting have varied also. This paper points out the frequency and socio-demographic characteristics of one-parent families in Serbia and other countries, as well as the characteristics of single parents and the problems they faced in parental role. Also it points out the ways of occurrence of one parent families as well as the different criteria of division this kind of families.
